Sixteen-year-old Johnny is a young apprentice of harness horse racing. He alternates his lessons with weeks of apprenticeship in a stable, where Jean teaches him the trade. The awareness that Coquelicot, a newly arrived horse struggling to prove his worth, is in danger makes him doubt his vocation.
