The panel will address one of the industry’s key questions: why certain works manage to enter festival programming, circulate internationally, and build a sustained career, while others — with similar proposals or even greater formal ambition — remain outside the circuit.
The conversation will feature Laurence Boyce, Head of Fiction Programming at PÖFF Shorts and one of the most influential voices in European short film programming, with a long-standing commitment to defending the short film format and supporting new generations of filmmakers in their international journeys; and Amélie Quéret, producer and founder of Respiro Productions, a company specialized in European co-productions, with more than twenty internationally selected and award-winning short films.
The combination of both perspectives will open a discussion from both the programming and production sides, as well as from the perspective of supporting emerging filmmakers: how selection decisions are actually made, what kinds of films are currently able to circulate within the international ecosystem, what festivals are looking for beyond “quality” or “originality,” and why certain filmmakers succeed in building long-term careers while others remain outside the circuit.
The conversation will also explore issues related to the international circulation of films, strategies for supporting new talent, and the often invisible criteria that influence both festival programming and the commitment of producers and distributors to particular emerging directors.
