Cinema Jove Honours Félix Sabroso with the Premio Luna de Valencia for His Seamless Career Across Film and Television
  • Actress Priscilla Delgado will receive the ‘Un futuro de cine’ award after establishing herself in the international cast of the series Euphoria
  • The festival will join forces with the Film Academy Summer Campus through the screening of Marta Matute’s award-winning debut feature Yo no moriré de amor

Cinema Jove recognizes Félix Sabroso with the Luna de Valencia award for his career as a filmmaker and television creator, a screenwriter and director who perfectly embodies the harmonious coexistence of genres and media.

After training as a screenwriter between Madrid and New York, Sabroso began his professional career at Televisión Española, writing for various entertainment formats. His leap into film directing and screenwriting came in 1996 with the comedy Perdona bonita, pero Lucas me quería a mí, developed in tandem with Dunia Ayaso, his artistic and personal partner until her passing in 2014.

That debut was a major box office success and received numerous awards, including Best Screenplay at the Mostra de València. It was later adapted for the stage and even turned into a musical.

His career consolidated in 1998 with the feature film El grito en el cielo and his first foray into television sitcoms, Quítate tú pa’ ponerme yo. Since then, Sabroso has balanced film production with a strong presence in television, developing both entertainment programs and high-impact fiction series. One example is Mujeres (2006), produced by Almodóvar’s company (El Deseo) for TVE and successfully exported to Italy’s RAI. He also owes his third film, Descongélate (2003), to the Almodóvar brothers, for which he also wrote the screenplay.

Throughout his prolific career, the filmmaker has continued delivering feature films with strong critical and commercial impact such as Los años desnudos (2008), La isla interior (2009), and El tiempo de los monstruos (2015), which have screened at international festivals.

In the field of audiovisual management and production, Sabroso spent more than three years as head of fiction content at Mediaset España, where he oversaw the development of more than a dozen series, later continuing his work with leading production companies such as Zeta Studios, Mod Producciones, Plano a Plano, and Producciones Mandarina.

In recent years, he has been involved in several key Spanish fiction projects. In 2022, he joined the writing team of the acclaimed series Veneno, created by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo for atresplayer, and directed and executive produced the series Mentiras pasajeras, once again produced by El Deseo.

His most recent success is the series Furia, created and directed for HBO Max, whose global premiere last year received widespread critical acclaim in outlets such as The New York Times, Time, and major media in France, Mexico, and Argentina.

He is currently in post-production on the second season of the series, which will feature a cast led by Carmen Maura, Maribel Verdú, Ana Mena, María León, Cecilia Suárez, and Clara Sans, alongside Ana Torrent and Claudia Salas, who also appeared in the first season.

Priscilla Delgado leads the generational shift

The festival will also award its “Un futuro de cine” prize to actress Priscilla Delgado.

Delgado’s talent has led to a strong artistic evolution in today’s audiovisual landscape. Born in Puerto Rico and raised in Spain, she began her acting career at a very young age.

The general public discovered her in the series Los protegidos (2010), a role that brought her popularity and led to her working under Pedro Almodóvar in the film Julieta (2016).

Her international profile was later consolidated through her participation in the U.S. series A League of Their Own (2022). Since then, she has established herself as one of the most promising young actresses of her generation, demonstrating maturity and versatility across both film and television.

She is currently one of the standout names in the third and final season of Euphoria, joining the ensemble cast of young actors in Sam Levinson’s HBO Max series.

Partnership with the Film Academy Summer Campus

Cinema Jove and the Film Academy Summer Campus will develop several joint activities this year. This initiative has been held in Valencia since 2023, organized by the Film Academy in collaboration with Netflix and with the support of the Valencia City Council.

Coinciding with Cinema Jove’s dates, both spaces will collaborate through a special screening and a podcast recording.

On Monday, June 22, a special screening of Yo no moriré de amor, the directorial debut of Marta Matute, will take place at the Filmoteca, followed by a talk with the director and the president of the Film Academy, Fernando Méndez-Leite.

The feature film comes with strong recognition from the recent Málaga Film Festival, where it won the Golden Biznaga for Best Film, the Silver Biznaga for Best Actress (Júlia Mascort), the Silver Biznaga for Best Supporting Actor (Tomás del Estal), and the Feroz Puerta Oscura Award.

The film stars Mascort and del Estal alongside Sonia Almarcha and Laura Weissmahr, winner of Goya and Gaudí awards for Salve Maria (Mar Coll, 2024).

The story is based on Matute’s personal experience, as from the age of 18 to 27 she cared for her mother, who suffered from a degenerative disease. The filmmaker has said she began writing the film “out of a desire to accompany all those who care for a loved one, especially young people who become early caregivers, inevitably forced to mature and sacrifice part of their youth out of love.”

Yo no moriré de amor originated in the second edition of the Film Academy Residencies, making it an example of the journey an audiovisual project can take from development to theatrical release.

On Friday, June 26, a live recording of an episode of the Observatory of Diversity in Audiovisual Media (ODA) podcast titled ¡Corten! Descodificando la ficción will take place at Fnac.

The episode, hosted by Jorge Gonzalo (ODA) and Jesús Blanquiño (Podium Podcast), will discuss the representation of non-normative bodies in contemporary fiction narratives.
