CINEMA JOVE

The Valencia International Film Festival – Cinema Jove is a festival that takes place annually in Valencia in June. It is accredited by the FIAPF in the category of “Specialised Competitive Festivals”.

The festival is a forum for young international filmmakers to meet, and its vocation is to showcase the best international cinema directed by young people.

Cinema Jove is organised by the Conselleria d’Educació Cultura i Esport  through the Institut Valencià de Cultura.

Cinema Jove has four official or competition sections, all of which have their respective juries.

LONG FILMS

Films of 60 minutes or more. International section whose films constitute a premiere in Spain. Directors must be no more than 40 years old.

SHORT FILMS

Films up to 30 minutes long. It is an international selection whose minimum requirement is its premiere in the Valencian Community. As in the Official Feature Film Section, directors must not be over 40 years old.

SERIES

International selection of series (previously known as webseries) that joined Cinema Jove in 2016. In addition to a competitive section, it consists of talks and round tables on the production of series.

AUDIOVISUAL MEETING FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

The national section of short films made by students and young creators up to 25 years old is the founding section of Cinema Jove and brings together a selection of works that reflect the new perspectives of emerging audiovisual media.

The section includes Cinema Kids, an initiative developed in collaboration with the French festival Premiers Plans d’Angers. On June 24, the Sala Rialto will host two programs of animated short films aimed at children, and will also present the Cinema Kids Audience Award, which will be awarded during the festival’s closing gala.

NON-COMPETITIVE SECTIONS

Cinema Jove also screens a series of non-competitive sections whose theme, always around youth, tends to change with the editions, although several of them are maintained over the years

Luna de Valencia Award

An honorary Cinema Jove award dedicated to a director who is recognised for his or her own cinematographic style, a recognisable narrative in contemporary cinema. In addition to the director’s visit to the festival, the festival dedicates a retrospective to his film work as a whole.

El Joven, La Joven…

The first period of directors who are now established; the films they directed before they turned 40. In other words, films that could have competed in the Official Section of Cinema Jove. The cycles The Young David Lynch, The Young Agnès Varda, The Young Coen Brothers… were shown.

INDUSTRY

Cinema Jove includes Curt Creixent and ProMercat, two sections dedicated to the film industry, i.e. a series of round tables, talks, pitch sessions and other professional meetings that encourage learning, alliances and the creation of new works.

Curt Creixent and ProMercat are dedicated to short and feature films respectively.
