The cycle ‘El Joven…’ focuses on the initial stage of currently renowned directors, showcasing their first films, those that could have competed in Cinema Jove. This year highlights Tim Burton, known for his macabre and gothic style that envelops misfit characters.
The screenings of this cycle, dedicated to the young Tim Burton, will take place from June 22 to 27 at the Octubre Centre de Cultura Contemporània and include the short film ‘Frankenweenie’ (1984) and the feature films ‘Edward Scissorhands’ (1990), ‘Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure’ (1985), ‘Ed Wood’ (1994), ‘Mars Attacks!’ (1996), and ‘Sleepy Hollow’ (1999).
Burton, in addition to being a director, is a screenwriter, producer, artist, and animator. ‘Frankenweenie’ (1984) revitalized the stop-motion animation genre, telling the story of a boy who resurrects his dog with the power of science.
‘Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure’ (1985) was his feature film debut, an adventure comedy starring Paul Reubens. ‘Edward Scissorhands’ (1990), starring Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, and Dianne Wiest, critiques superficiality and consumerism through the story of a man with scissors for hands.
In ‘Ed Wood’ (1994), Burton pays tribute to the B-movie director Ed Wood, played by Johnny Depp. ‘Mars Attacks!’ (1996), starring Jack Nicholson, is a humorous tribute to 1950s science fiction.
The cycle culminates with ‘Sleepy Hollow’ (1999), a neo-gothic film where Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci investigate the legend of a headless horseman.
