Cinema Jove counts with ‘lettering’ artist Joan Quirós for the 36th edition image
  • The valencian professional has worked with brands like Harper Collins New York, Austral Editorial / Planeta, El País, Cornelia James, Amstel, Thorntons, BBVA, Santillana and Samsung

‘Lettering’ and calligraphy expert Joan Quirós (Valencia, 1982) will in charge of designing the poster for the 36th edition of Cinema Jove, the International Film Festival of Valencia, organized by the Institut Valencià de Cultura and programmed in Valencia from the 18th to the 26th of June of this year.

With this choice, the Art Director for the festival, Ada Diez, aspires to bring the urban language closer to the Hollywood graphology of the 50s. “This year’s poster will pick up the young expression through ‘tag’s in the streets of the cities, mixing it with neon and the charismatic vintage signs of the USA roads”, affirms.

In its decision to use typography as the main element of the poster, the festival wants to show the diversity of design proposals and illustration that exist in Valencia, a city that is preparing to celebrate its resolution of World Design Capital in 2022.

“Even if we don’t realize, every time we write we’re drawing. Letters are illustrations in their selves, so we have considered interesting to transfer such a quotidian act to the festival image, in order to transform this edition of Cinema Jove in our own Sunset Boulevard”, tells us Ada.

From Valencia to the world

Joan Quirós is an independent professional specialized in calligraphy and lettering and based in Valencia, city form which he works for the rest of the world.

Passionate about letters and its forms, he started to show interest in them in adolescence, a passion that became stronger through his Superior Studies in Graphic Design that he coursed in his hometown.

Since 2012 he decided to immerse fully in the written and the drawn word, widening his skills and knowledge with some of the most important masters of the country, such as Ivan Castro, Keith and Amanda Adams or Oriol Miró. That’s why he shows a great respect for the historic tradition of writing and labeling, paying special attention and care to the shapes, creating a nexus between past and present and applying his contemporary perspective to each one of his projects.

His background and knowledge, from graphic design to calligraphy and lettering have allowed him to help brands, institutions and international business to enhance the communication with their clients through letters in the advertisement field, publishing design, packaging and corporate identity.

Among the brands he has worked with we can find Harper Collins New York, Austral Editorial / Planeta, El País, Cornelia James, Amstel, Thorntons, BBVA, Santillana and Samsung.
